Friends,
September’s weather has been beautiful!
The Outreach Center warmly welcomes Father John Jairo Granados Morales as the new Administrator of the Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. Father John has jumped in, rolled up his sleeves, and has been making very positive changes with the help of many parish volunteers. Father John has a great spirit!
Although the school year is already underway, we are still distributing backpacks filled with school supplies; more than 400 backpacks have already gone out! A big ‘Thank you’ to everyone who has donated as your generosity ensures that these children are fully equipped and ready to learn.
Other points of note:
Nutrition Education Workshops – The Outreach is hosting a series of Nutrition Education Workshops with the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, in partnership with NYU’s “Nourish Together” initiative at the Parish Hall. The September 18th session was titled “Rethink Your Drink,” and the next workshop is “Eat Right on a Budget.” It’s all about education and empowerment in choosing what you eat and drink for a healthy body.
Wyandanch Fall Job Fair – Last week, the Outreach Center hosted the Wyandanch Fall Job Fair. The event was sponsored by the Wyandanch Community Resource Center, Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine, Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, and the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing, and Consumer Affairs. The event was a great success with 30 employers from a variety of industries and 177 job seekers in attendance. Thank you to Father John for the use of the Parish Hall who mentioned the parking lot was full!
Mobile Outreach Bus – The Catholic Health Mobile Outreach Bus will be at the Outreach Center on Friday, October 3rd. The service offers free flu shots, blood pressure screening, BMI screening, simple blood test for cholesterol and glucose, with referrals if needed. No insurance or ID required. Please help get the word out.
A Few Asks:
- Winter Coats & Clothing: As the weather turns colder, requests for clean, gently used winter coats and sweatshirts (all ages and sizes) are already coming in.
- Volunteers: We could use a few more hands from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. If you’re available and would like to volunteer, please call me for more details.
- Socks for the Homeless: As the homeless community prepares for the colder months, one of their first requests is for dry socks. Any donations are appreciated.
In this chaotic world, let’s be kind to each other, show patience and understanding, and a willingness to compromise.
Thank you, as always, for your support.
Joe
