Outreach Center Update

Friends,

All is good at the Outreach Center at this time.  We are extremely busy with our food and clothing pantry as we have never seen such a great need for basic food and clothing.  Although a limit was established for the maximum number of daily clients, this was never enforced until last month. We were forced to close early on a few days due to the sheer number of people coming for food.   It is comforting that people know that they can come to us for help although it’s tough keeping our shelves fully stocked. We are also seeing more children coming to the Outreach without winter coats and hats, but since we have been receiving new children’s coats, they are able to leave warm.

December Outreach Update

Friends,

This year, over 400 children have registered to receive toys; each child gets three new, age and gender appropriate toys this year (1,200 toys). Needless to say, the Outreach is humming with activity as we bag the toys and call each family; the adults come and discreetly pick up the toys so they can be wrapped in time for Christmas (we provide wrapping paper). Our Christmas food distribution is scheduled for Monday, December 18th.

Outreach Center Update

It has been a busy 50th-year anniversary for the Gerald J. Ryan Outreach Center here in Wyandanch.

A sincere ‘Thank you” to all the people who donated this past summer to purchase ice cream and pizza for the children at camp! The seventy-five campers loved the special attention and treats they received each week. We told the campers that people donated the ice cream and pizza because they are special and people care about them. All children need to know they are loved, especially those who are homeless or live in a shelter.

Outreach Center Update – Summer Camp!

Friends,

As you know, our summer camp is in full swing with 75 kids registered and more being added daily!

On day three, a CBS van with a camera crew and reporter showed up to film a story on Island Harvest and their summer lunch program. Although we only had about an hour’s notice, I thought it worked out well.

Outreach Center Update

Friends,

The Outreach is feeling kind of lucky!

The success of any golf outing is predicated on the weather and we could not have asked for a more perfect day and night on May 22nd. Our Outreach Center Summer Camp Golf Outing fundraiser was a complete success as 132 golfers and an additional 45 dinner guests packed the venue while the three piece band played outside adding a festive atmosphere to the event. This year, we honored Rich Schaffer for his 20 year plus years of personal support and guidance, Cathy Jessop from St Anne’s Parish for her support and client facing volunteer hours, and the entire Fiorini family for their 38 years of support to the Outreach; we also used this opportunity to recognize a few of our many sponsors and supporters. The 50/50 raffle grossed a record $8,000; also, the winner turned out to be a former scholarship camper from over 30 years ago, who now lives in Babylon and has a successful career. The main purpose of the golf outing is to provide funds for the Summer Camp so that campers who cannot afford the minimal subsidized registration fees will have the opportunity to attend camp and enjoy summer activities as any kid should.

Outreach Center Update

Friends,

A few updates:

The weather has been perfect for the last four Monday nights for our Soccer Clinic, so let’s continue to keep our fingers crossed! So far, today looks ok.  Over 100 children have registered, and an average of 90 come to play every week.   Special thanks to the outreach center volunteer coaches, as they have really made this clinic a success.  We have three large fields which are being used by the older boys and girls who play hard; this year, we have over 27 older girls playing every Monday, more than any prior year.  This is a great community event and a net win for all; the cops have great interaction with the players and their parents, and Deputy Supervisor and Councilman Tony Martinez make sure the fields and bathrooms are in perfect shape for us.
